The Indiana Senate Appropriations Committee has unanimously approved a bill that would give drivers the option of having a driver’s license on their smartphones to move to the full Senate floor, according to RTV6 Indianapolis.
Indiana State Senator Eddie Melton introduced the proposal. “I think convenience is the number one priority, of course,” Melton said in a previous story. “We want to help streamline and make things more accessible for vehicles, especially as you are upgrading your license,” Melton said.
Melton said proponents are working with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Indiana State Police to research a potential application and how it might work.
But in response to privacy concerns, he said that the application provides safeguards to secure the data and prevent identity fraud.
“You’re going to be able to log into your account and deactivate your license from the application, if you have a lost cell phone. So there are multiple safeguards,” Melton assured.
