MIAMI — The maker of the BolaWrap device, known for its non-lethal restraint technology, is now testing a drone-based version aimed at drone neutralization in law enforcement and tactical settings.

The company has developed a prototype system, dubbed Wrap-Merlin 1, that mounts BolaWrap 150 cartridges to a drone. The device launches Kevlar tethers to physically entangle hostile drones midair — offering a reusable, mechanical alternative to traditional counter-drone tactics like signal jamming or single-use interceptors.

Wrap says this physical capture approach could benefit agencies tasked with protecting crowds, sensitive facilities or tactical operations where drone incursions could be a threat.

How it works

The prototype loads up to six BolaWrap cartridges onto a first-person view (FPV) drone. Pilots use a remote deployment system with a live video feed to identify, track and fire a tether at another drone.

According to the company, the system supports multiple deployments during a single flight and is compatible with several NATO and U.S.-approved drone platforms.

Wrap says testing is underway in live environments, including counter-UAS ranges and operational settings. The company is leveraging existing BolaWrap manufacturing resources as part of its development process.
