Last year, the Global City Teams Challenge, which has been led by National Institute of Standards and Technology and funded since 2014, created a blueprint for deploying a public Wi-Fi system. The program works with experts to develop Smart City technologies and to share their knowledge and best practices.
This blueprint was developed by those who have designed, built and managed public Wi-Fi systems in the United States, including San Leandro, California, Mayor Pauline Cutter, Schenectady, New York, Mayor Gary McCarthy and the County of San Mateo, California, Board of Supervisors.
The blueprint provides use cases, advice on funding strategies, legal issues and procurement and includes a project management chapter with templates, worksheets, samples and lists that can be readily adopted by an agency launching a public Wi-Fi project.
