Four Major SMETS2 Contracts Now in Place for Aclara
CAMBRIDGE, UK — Aclara, a leading supplier of smart infrastructure solutions (SIS) to electric, gas and water utilities, has been awarded a contract with National Grid Smart to provide the SMETS2 (smart metering equipment technical specifications: second version) smart electricity meter, the SGM1400, as well as CPA-certified gas meters to National Grid Smart’s customers in the United Kingdom.
Aclara already has a significant share of the smart electricity meter market in the UK. Its SGM1300TM SMETS1 smart electricity meters are being widely deployed and will soon be upgraded to the more advanced SMETS2 meters by the Data Communications Company, the entity that supports the mass rollout of smart electricity and gas meters to homes and small businesses.
“Aclara has a proven track record as a reliable, customer-focused partner to utilities around the world, with great technical support and experience not only in large-scale projects but also with smart meters here in the UK. We are proud to have been awarded a contract for the provision of SMETS2 meters from National Grid Smart. We are committed to making the rollout of the SMETS2 smart meter program as smooth as possible,” said Allan Connolly, president of Aclara and divisional vice president of Hubbell Power Systems.
Aclara’s SGM1400 SMETS2 smart electricity meter, developed specifically to support large-scale smart meter deployment in the UK’s national smart meter rollout program, received Commercial Product Assurance (CPA) certification by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in September 2017. Last April, Smart gas meters provided by FLONIDAN, Aclara’s strategic partner for the SMETS2 rollout, also were granted CPA certification, meaning that both smart electricity and gas meters provided by Aclara can be deployed immediately in the National Grid Smart implementation.
CPA certification allows energy suppliers to install the SMETS2 smart meters in large-scale deployments that are part of the UK’s National Smart Metering Implementation Program. This initiative mandates installation of approximately 53 million smart electricity and gas meters in more than 30 million homes and businesses in Wales, Scotland and England by the end of 2020.
“We hope that this agreement is the start of a wider relationship between Aclara and National Grid, including working together on opportunities in the UK, United States and globally. It builds on our success in the UK Smart Metering market, which includes providing SMETS1 meters to three of the Big Six UK Energy Suppliers and represents our fourth major SMETS2 contract in the UK,” said Jason Subirana, vice president, international, Aclara.
National Grid Smart provides energy suppliers with turnkey solutions to meet their smart metering obligations. They are an established and recognised partner within the industry that design and deliver the right smart solution to ensure first class customer experience for both energy suppliers and their customers. National Grid Smart is part of National Grid plc, one of the largest investor-owned utilities, focused on transmission activities in electricity and gas.
