A 2,000-square-foot “green roof” atop the historic Paramount Film Exchange building in Uptown will capture at least 60,000 gallons of stormwater runoff that would otherwise contribute to sewage overflow.
That’s according to Joel Perkovich, a landscape architect working with the nonprofit StartUptown, which was awarded a grant from the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority for the project that will include water harvesting technology, food production and space for movie screenings.
“It’s really going to be a really potent example in a small space of how you can cleverly and sustainably use stormwater as an asset and also to provide high-quality green space,” he said.
The sewer authority announced 17 grants totaling $250,000 for green infrastructure projects like these in neighborhoods throughout the city.
