Nextdoor has announced that it will now carry geo-targeted messages from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the more than 140,000 U.S. neighborhoods, representing over 70 percent of the country, using the application. Communities will now receive FEMA emergency messaging leading up to, during and after natural disasters, such as hurricanes, snow storms and major flooding.
The partnership enables FEMA to deliver hyperlocal emergency and disaster preparedness updates through the platform.
Neighbors are already using Nextdoor to discuss emergency and disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.
Our neighbors are often the first people we turn to for help in times of need,” said Nirav Tolia, Nextdoor co-founder and chef executive officer.
Nextdoor is free for both neighborhoods and FEMA. Neighborhoods establish their own communities on the app, and FEMA will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information or content.
