The FCC has approved Kari’s Law, a new law that requires all multi-line phones in places like hotels and office buildings to direct dial 911, according to NewsChannel6Now.com.

The law applies to multi-line phones installed or manufactured after February 2020.

The law is named for Kari Hunt who was murdered in a Texas hotel room in 2014. Her 9-year-old daughter was unable to reach 911 during her attack but because she did not know to dial a 9 to get an outside line first. At the time, the American Hotel & Lodging Association found that just about 45 percent of franchised hotels and motels and 32 percent of independent hotels had direct 911 dialing.

The bill was passed by Congress and signed by the President in 2018.
