The National Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) Response System Readiness Cooperative Agreement was created to support the continued advancement and sustainment of national search and rescue efforts and agencies. The program aids local search-and-rescue operations responding to hazardous materials spills, structural collapses and natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and hurricanes, and aircraft and other accidents.
The $34.2 million agreement, a joint effort of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is to help ensure the 28 US&R task forces are adequately equipped to perform effective disaster incident response. State, county and city and town governments that sponsor the task forces are eligible to apply.
The grant covers funding for the operational costs of management, training, equipment and storage and maintenance. Urban Search & Rescue program areas include:
- Disaster planning/assistance
- Emergency response and public safety
- Hazmat & CBRNE response
- Training and continuing education
- Disaster planning/assistance
- EMS & trauma equipment
- Emergency management
- Fire suppression
- Response vehicle
