SEATTLE - The first city-sanctioned homeless encampments open this week. Residents started moving into the Interbay encampment at 3234 17th Avenue W. A camp in Ballard opens at 2826 NW Market St. this weekend.

“It’s a much safer place than an illegal encampment along the freeway among other places in the city,” Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said.

The Interbay encampment can hold 80 people; Ballard can accommodate 50.

People have expressed concerns about the camps. Harold Rodenberger, quartermaster of VFW post 3063 right next to the Ballard encampment, said business owners and homeowners had their reasons.
