BOSTON — Boston has opened a new homeless shelter for men.
Mayor Marty Walsh says the new shelter on Southampton Street will offer over 400 beds and many services lost when Boston’s largest homeless shelter on Long Island in Boston Harbor was forced to close in October, when the bridge leading to it was deemed unsafe.
The new shelter also has dedicated space for homeless young adults and transgender persons. Another city homeless shelter will be converted to an all-women’s shelter.
Walsh says temporary shelter beds set up after the Long Island bridge closure were closed this week.
The city also released a new plan to end homelessness that aims to end veteran homelessness by 2015 and chronic homelessness by 2018. It calls for a transformation of the homeless response system.
