Video: Greenest Cities include San Francisco

From strict recycling programs to transportation designed around bikes, the world’s greenest cities are leaders for a variety of environmental solutions.

Last month Expedia.com published the world’s greenest cities based on The Green City Index by Siemens.

The index compares environmental performance through 30 measures that address a wide range of environmental touch points. These include waste management, greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption and use of public transportation.

In the U.S., San Franisco, Calif., stands out for many reasons, but of particular note is its recycling rate of 80 percent. In comparison, the city of New York’s recycling rate, according to the Citizens Budget Commission, hovers around 18 percent--which is half the national rate. According to the commission, the city of New York spends a lot of money for its efforts.

Expedia’s greenest cities are:

  • Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Curitiba, Brazil
  • Oslo, Norway
  • San Francisco, United States
