Utah Senator Lincoln Fillmore is sponsoring a bill that would provide an additional appropriation of $200,000 to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to gather information from potential mobile driver’s license (mDL) vendors.
The Utah Driver’s License Division is already in the process of vetting vendors for a potential mobile driver’s license (mDL) program, said Chris Caras, director of the Driver License Division with DPS, according to KUTV.
As technology advances we see this is something that could be of value to citizens,” Caras said, noting that cybersecurity of personal information is a top priority.
The bill, SB100, currently states that the department would also establish a process to obtain a digital license by July 1, 2020.
Fillmore noted that a potential mDL program in the state would not replace physical driver’s licenses.
