Firefighters racing into a burning building are equipped to give you oxygen. But are they capable of providing that critical need to your pets as well?
With pets occupying so many households, there are oxygen masks made specifically for animals — masks that firefighters can use to save the lives of a variety of furry residents. Whether your local fire department actually carries those masks, however, is another story.
Pet oxygen masks don’t come cheap, and small, volunteer fire departments often cannot afford to purchase them, said David Signor, chief of the Elmsford Fire Department.
“It’s a hard thing for volunteer fire departments to put in their budgets,” he said. “It’s really a necessity you need. You come across a lot of pets in fires.”
