HAVEN, Kan. — A Kansas police department can keep its “In God We Trust” decals.
Earlier this month, the Haven City Council voted to remove the decals from police vehicles, sparking outrage among some residents, KWCH reported. The fallout prompted a special town meeting on Monday, during which city councilors voted 3-2 to reverse the decision, according to the report. The meeting wasn’t originally going to include a vote, but public pressure from attendees leveraged the change, according to KWCH.
The initial vote on May 2 was unanimous and came from a desire to separate church and state, the report said. Council member Sandra Williams said she didn’t think the police department was the proper place to be talking about God. That vote also required Haven Police to remove Bible scripture quotes from its Facebook page. It’s unclear if the Facebook quotes will be restored as well.
Haven Mayor Adam Wright said he received more than 100 emails after the first vote, with all but two in support of the decals. Wright clarified that the decals were purchased by an officer, not with city funds.
