The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allocated $660 million in Indian Housing Block Grants (IHBGs) to 587 Native American tribes in 35 states. IHBGs are for affordable housing development, Indian Housing Program assistance, and related initiatives.
“Over the life of the program, recipients have been able to build or acquire almost 37,000 affordable homes and have rehabilitated more than 77,000 housing units,” said Lourdes Castro Ramírez, HUD principal deputy assistant secretary.
HUD proposes to increase IHBG funding by $50 million for Fiscal Year 2017. Some of the additional funding is earmarked for community development projects, such as health clinics and pre-school facilities.
