Visit Topeka and federal funds will pay for Topeka’s new wayfinding sign system, city planning director Bill Fiander said.

Visit Topeka approached Metropolitan Topeka Planning Organization’s policy board last year to ask for funding of a new wayfinding sign system to help implement a new branding plan for the city.

The MTPO policy board agreed and approved a $70,000 budget for 2016, including $14,000 — a 20 percent match — from Visit Topeka and $56,000 from community planning grants.

The actual cost of the contract was amended to $72,900, $14,580 from Visit Topeka and $58,320 from community planning grants.

The project covers design, placement and content. Visit Topeka has proposed use of the transient guest tax funds for construction, which was presented to the city council’s TGT committee. The committee is accepting applications for the TGT funds and will make a final determination later this month, said Brett Oetting, president and chief executive officer of Visit Topeka.
