It may have been the lunch hour at the Council Bluffs Recycling Center, but it looked more like rush hour. Not one or even two, but three large recycling trucks were in line to dispose of items collected along curb sites.
“It’s not unusual to get one to three trucks around this time each day,” said Shannon Meister, the center’s education coordinator.
Recycling in Council Bluffs remains at a steady rate, she said, and in some cases is – pardon the pun – picking up steam. Or, in reality, glass.
Statewide, recyling rates are at 24 percent – second only to Kansas among states along the Missouri River corridor – according to a recent survey by the Nebraska State Recycling Association. The survey found Nebraska’s rate to be 17 percent. However, the national average is 34 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
