Five schools in Pittsburgh Public Schools have been awarded federal School Improvement Grants of at least $1 million each.
Gov. Tom Wolf and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera today announced the list of nine schools statewide receiving a total of $23.5 million in the competitive process.
Schools winning the grants are among the lowest achieving in the state and have agreed to follow a reform model developed by the federal government. The amounts awarded for 2015-16 include:
• Pittsburgh Brashear High School in Beechview, $1.7 million.
• Pittsburgh Faison K-5 in Homewood, $1.5 million.
• Pittsburgh King PreK-8, North Side, nearly $1.6 million.
• Pittsburgh Westinghouse 6-12, in Homewood, nearly $1.4 million.
• Pittsburgh Perry High School, North Side, $1.1 million.
The federal government has offered such grants since 2009-10.
