COAL CITY – Chad and Melissa Hansen have faced a lot of uncertainties since the EF3 tornado struck their Coal City home on June 22, forcing them to rent a home in Minooka.
When a 90-foot tree landed on their two-story residence on Mallard Court, it damaged the entire south side of the home, forcing the family to move until the house can be rebuilt. Getting settled in a new community and dealing with insurance woes are just some of the concerns the family is dealing with.
One worry the family no longer has is how children Mason Mulcahy and Aiden Hansen will get to school in Coal City now that they live in Minooka.
Transportation is being scheduled for the 280 children who have been displaced from their homes in Coal City to communities around Grundy County and farther, before the first day of school Aug. 14.
Melissa Hansen was concerned whether a bus would make it to Minooka for her kids. But then Kent Bugg, superintendent of Coal City Community Unit School District 1, called and said there already is a bus that takes students from Minooka to Coal City for co-op classes.
