Study: 60% Of Americans Afraid To Bike In Traffic

Many bicyclists are still fearful for their safety when riding through dense car traffic

Crossing bridges on sidewalks shouldn’t require the courage of some kind of daredevil.

But when the wind swishes your cheek as vehicles traveling close to 40 miles per hour whir by, traversing the Perkins Road Overpass Bridge on foot or by bike can feel dangerous.

Robert Ping, a cyclist and engineer from Portland, helped lead a walking tour Tuesday (Aug. 18) of the Perkins Road Overpass area in Baton Rouge as part of an audit of the area’s pedestrian friendliness.

He and another engineer, Ian Lockwood of Orlando, were in town from the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute to consult on the best way to implement the city’s “complete streets” policy in and around the popular restaurant and retail hub. Complete streets policies require all transportation improvements to be designed and constructed to accommodate walking, bicycling and transit use, along with serving vehicles.
