Playgrounds and bike paths are good ways to get children outside.

But a new opportunity with Great Outdoors Colorado aims to connect children with wild places by promoting more authentic outdoor experiences.

The city of Grand Junction is applying to be one of five community pilot programs in the hopes of earning a grant to develop the banks of the Colorado River at Las Colonias Park into an outdoor classroom.

Great Outdoors Colorado’s Inspire Initiative aims to provide $25 million in funding for projects that get children outside. The grants include money for outdoor programs for children, a new venture for the agency.

The city is applying for a Level 1 planning grant, which would consist of a $100,000 award.
