The Lackawanna Fire Department will receive a grant of about $536,000 from the federal government, Rep. Brian Higgins and City of Lackawanna Mayor Geoff Szymanski announced Thursday.
The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, program. The funds will be used to add four new firefighters to the department’s 46-member staff, Lackawanna Fire Chief Ralph Galanti said in a news release.
The fire department has received about $2.3 million in federal fire grant support since 2005, Galanti said.
The Lackawanna Fire Department operates three firehouses and responds to about 3,000 emergency medical and fire calls a year.
