CARLISLE – Cumberland County Commissioners on Monday approved the purchase of new emergency system officials say will save time and money. And maybe even lives.

Commissioners approved the installation of a silent dispatch system for the 911 Center. This system, officials explained, will allow first responders and dispatchers to communicate over a web-based program using computers and mobile devices in lieu of radios for non-emergency situations.

This is something that county Chief Clerk Larry Thomas last week said will free up dispatchers so they can focus on actual emergency calls.

The system comes in at a cost of $401,434, which will be funded through part of the $920,000 in savings the county’s Department of Public Safety found through a recent restructuring that reduced the office staff from 15 to 12 full-time positions.
