Historically, public art was no stranger to Detroit. As of late, Detroit has become more renowned for its creativity and nurturing of innovative thought. After emerging from bankruptcy, local artists and creative professionals started to apply their skills and vision to the vacant spaces throughout the city. Because Detroit was basically a blank canvas for artists to experiment on, the city has become a mecca for a creative renaissance which includes:
- Back-lot murals
- Pop-up sculpture parks
- Public performance art
For artists to feel confident in transforming abandoned properties and city sidewalks into stages and works of art, the city had to nurture the creativity. According to Inc, to support local artistic expression, Detroit teaches us to:
- Work With A Blank Slate When you build from nothing there is no creative constraint or expectations to meet. Enjoy it!
- Rethink And Redefine Vacant Space As Creative Resources Look at available land and structures as tools to enable and inspire local creatives.
- Embrace The Use Of Some Space To Not Drive Sales The creation of public art should not be encouraged for the sake of profits, but rather to incite community development.
- Be Open To A Variety of Genres There are many forms of art that can be expressed in the public space. Cities should be sure to encourage all genres.
- Give Back To The Community Available land and resources can be set aside to provide on-going support for local creatives and innovators.
