Boulder officials say a proposal to remove vehicle lanes from several busy streets should not increase response times for emergency vehicles.
The right-sizing pilot program, if approved, will reduce the number of vehicle lanes on four streets in Boulder to make room for wider bike lanes. The goal is to encourage more people to commute by bike, ease the flow of traffic and reduce the number of accidents.
City spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said the Boulder Police Department, Boulder Fire Rescue and the city’s transportation department have been discussing how best to reduce the project’s impact on response times, and have come up with what they consider satisfactory solutions.
“The central question is this — when there’s an emergency vehicle coming through traffic with lights and sirens on, is it going to be possible for motorists and cyclists to move out of the way?” Huntley said.
