Beaming with pride, many in the nation are celebrating the 2016 Coast Guard Day. For 226 years, the coast Guard has been ready. At first to check on shipping tariffs, but since 1915, they have focused on saving lives.

Perhaps nobody is partying harder to honor this corp than the very first Coast Guard City.
Grand Haven, Mich., became a Coast Guard City on November 13, 1998.
Festivities have been going on since July 29th--parades, fireworks and more in epic solute.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars is also adding to the festivities.
They are kicking off today’s celebration with a Yappy Hour Dog Social--with beer for the humans.
There will also be a Pig Roast Pig Out, Patriot Breakfast, rock bands and of course, the free admission beer tent.

Portsmouth, Va., became a Coast Guard City on November 17, 2009.
To celebrate Coast Guard Day, the city hosted a joint run of the Coast Guard 5K and Cutter 10K. Part of the course went through the base.

Kodiak, Ala., became a Coast Guard City on September 15, 2007.
They are killing it with free 9 holes of golf today, and giving away four day-long boat rentals for the big celebration BBQ this Saturday.
New York, New York, may not be an official Coast Guard City, but is celebrating Coast Guard Day in high style.
The Coast Guard Eagle Tall Ship entered New York Harbor with cast members of Broadway’s Hamilton. The show is about Alexander Hamilton, whom as Secretary of the Treasury, founded the Revenue Marine, which became the U.S. Coast Guard, on August 4, 1790.
