The data that Boulder transportation planners collected before removing vehicle lanes and widening bike lanes on Folsom Street is adequate to assess the impact of the project and more than many cities collect before implementing new street designs, two transportation engineers who didn’t work on the project said.
As Boulder worked on plans to “right-size” not just Folsom, but also Iris Avenue, 55th Street and 63rd Street, transportation planners and consultants working with the city collected both primary and secondary metrics to use in designing the project and in assessing how effective it is at improving bike ridership and safety for all users without causing excessive congestion.
Some information reflected years of data. For example, the city compiled three years worth of crash data and looked at the circumstances of each accident and whether it could have been prevented.
Other pieces of information were collected on a single day per street.
