Pittsburg, Kan. - Machines haven’t replaced human labor yet, but they are reducing risk of injury.
In Pittsburg, this season’s purchase of a remote-controlled lawn mower is helping city employees safely navigate tricky mowing areas, such as slopes and saturated patches of ground.
“It’s a phenomenal piece of machinery,” said Dave Longan, an equipment operator for the City of Pittsburg who is trained to use the mower.
Longan said the mower’s low center of gravity allows it to climb hills that would challenge traditional tractors — up to 60-degree slopes, and he added that the relatively lighter piece of equipment can make it in and out of soggy ditches, allowing the city to keep those areas mowed shorter in the spring.
