The Washington Township Fire Department recently received a grant for four new electrocardiographic (ECG) monitors for the EMS department to improve the quality of CPR on patients.

Every year around December, fire departments are able to apply for Assistance to Firefighter Grants for needed supplies and upgrades to the department’s inventory. In December 2014, Chief Brian Tyrell, Assistant Chief Robert Schmelzer and other firefighters worked together to determine what was most needed for the fire department to operate at its best.

“The EMS division of the department determined that replacing our outdated ECG monitors was most important to our community,” Schmelzer said.

Gary Wehrwein, the department’s EMS coordinator, worked on the grant with a few other firefighters and the chiefs in January 2015. In July 2015, the department was awarded a grant for $154,433. The award states that the township will pay 10 percent of the award amount, $14,039, and the $140,394 will come from the federal government.
