Annapolis could leap to the front of the green-energy movement if plans for a 16.8-megawatt solar energy facility are approved.

Annapolis Renewable Energy Park would house the nation’s largest solar energy project installed on a closed landfill, Mayor Mike Pantelides said. The city’s landfill, located near Interstate 97, Maryland Route 450 and Crownsville Road in Anne Arundel County, is 80 acres.

Under terms of the 20-year lease, Annapolis would receive an average of $260,000 annually. The facility would generate about 21.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, an amount that offsets the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 3,168 passenger vehicles. Its electricity production is projected to offset carbon emissions of 2,070 homes’ electricity use for one year, that’s about 12.5 percent of the annual household electricity usage in Annapolis.
