Lancaster, California, has plans to invest more than $140 million on renewable energy programs for residents, businesses, schools, medical and municipal facilities. The result will be more than 1,000 jobs and a leadership role in sustainability and energy savings.
As far back as 1994, Lancaster made energy reduction a priority by adopting a resolution to use alternative fuels whenever possible. According to Renewable Energy World, the city has a goal of becoming the alternative energy capital of the world.
In the last two years, Lancaster has launched a five-megawatt solar plant, as well as a $200,000 earth-friendly prototype home that allows for net-negative electricity usage. The home was built in partnership with BYD and KB Home.
Two new solar projects with SolarCity and Beautiful Earth Group will provide power to 9,200 homes and supply the local minor-league baseball team enough power to be 98 percent off-the-grid.
