The City of Aberdeen has a new designation that city officials hope will let them get more grants and more recognition as a city committed to energy efficiency.

The city announced earlier this month it is officially a Smart Energy Community. During the annual convention of the Maryland Municipal League in June, Aberdeen was welcomed as one of the newest Smart Energy Communities in the state, according to a press release.

“Aberdeen has exhibited leadership in smart energy management,” the release states. “Through our participation in the program, Aberdeen will receive grants to fund energy efficiency, renewable energy and/or clean transportation projects.”

The program is run by the Maryland Energy Administration and supports energy projects. It makes $2.5 million available for all Smart Energy Communities for fiscal year 2016, according to the program’s website.
