With the recent closings of U.S. embassies in the Middle East and North Africa, the need to secure our facilities against the ever-present terrorist threat has been brought into the spotlight once again. Both inside and outside the U.S., the increase in terrorist activities targeting U.S. citizens has made it imperative that governing agencies and private companies provide effective security protection for facilities against these threats.
It has become necessary to have current information on fundamental and advanced security/antiterrorism engineering solutions that address best practices, state-of-the-art technologies and quantitative risk analyses to protect critical assets against terrorists.
How can you better understand and use this to mitigate risk? Here are some critical areas to increase your knowledge:
- Identify the functions and limitations of physical and electronic security hardware;
- Recognize how hardware can be used in conjunction with procedures and personnel to meet the growing threat of terrorism;
- Increase your level of awareness about terrorist ideologies;
- Learn a process to measure risk and gauge the effectiveness countermeasures; and
- Understand the process of risk analysis and how it differs from vulnerability analysis.
Both government buildings and private companies should be aware of these risks. What steps is your organization taking?
