MIDDLETOWN – After a prolonged public comment period marked by emotional and sometimes heated exchanges, the Middletown Town council voted unanimously to approve the record plan for a combination data center and natural gas co-generation power plant in the town’s Westown area.

The vote means council has blessed the site plan, although more approvals lie ahead that will require public hearings - hearings at which opponents of the plan will get the answers they sought, but didn’t get at this hearing, on questions about air and noise emissions.

The council chambers were full for the regular monthly meeting. The agenda included 16 other items, including what turned out to be a brief and uncontentious consideration of the record plan for the Delaware Sports Complex, a 170-acre, multi-sports complex, also in Westown, that was quickly approved with no dissent.
