Josh Wright wanted to bring new life to an old building in downtown Richmond, but he had a problem. The big, arched windows of the former Cokesbury bookstore on Grace Street were filled in long ago, which didn’t jibe with his vision for a European-style market and deli.
However, with the help of a city grant worth up to $20,000, the glass windows are being restored, which Wright hopes will give customers of his upcoming Pop’s Market on Grace the feeling of “sitting in the city even when you’re inside.”
Some of those windows will look out on Julep’s restaurant, which opened across the street this summer in the former Shields Shoes building. That storefront also got a facelift. The entry door, windows, decorative wood features and canopy sign were repaired and restored with about $13,000 of city assistance.
