State grants will help the York City School District expand its police department and pay for needed equipment, the unit’s chief told the school board.

Michael Muldrow said the school district has been awarded three grants totaling around $220,000 over the course of a year and a half.

A $60,000 grant will cover the cost of the school resource officer that the district contracts with York City Police to have.

Another grant, of about $40,000, will cover an additional school police officer, employed by the district, who will also serve as a special investigator with expertise in child abuse and mandatory reporting requirements. The position would be unique and give the district a staffer dedicated to responding to those sorts of issues plus someone to offer “instrumental education” to other employees, Muldrow said.
