Santa Fe Irrigation District customers cut water use by a total of 42% in May 2015 compared to the same period in 2013, announced District General Manager Michael Bardin.

“We want to thank our customers for working hard to do their part during this unprecedented drought,” said Bardin. “We are really proud of the way customers are responding in such a dramatic way to our outreach and water conservation programs.”

Coincidentally, this is the first day the District’s mandatory water allocation program is in effect. This program is in response to the Governor’s mandate that Santa Fe Irrigation District reduce water use 36% compared to 2013 usage. “We have a lot of customer activity on our website and calls from customers about the program, so we know customers are engaging.” said Bardin.

Additional evidence of a strong customer response to cut water use is that this year, about 300 people have signed up for free Water efficiency checkups offered by the District. This program sends a professional irrigation specialist to homes and businesses for an onsite review and then provides customer recommendations to help cut water use.

Also available online is guidance on how to read a meter, and a place under “www.SFIDwater/MyAccount” where customers can obtain their usage records. This is just one of many conservation programs, tips and incentives available on the District’s website at www.SFIDwater.org.

As the months warm up, it will take intensified efforts by customers to comply with the allocations. “We know they are working hard and being successful because our preliminary June water use numbers indicate water use continues to be below 2013 levels,” added Bardin.
