BOSTON - A report issued June 30 by Attorney General Maura Healey offers a sobering look at research showing an increase in diagnosed mental illness in the setting of general acute care hospitals, and a health-care system that lacks the benefit coordination and financial reimbursement to help consumers easily access behavioral health and substance abuse care.
The report, embedded below, warns that many general acute care hospitals are providing such care at a financial lost, something that could have a negative effect on other services.
“Not only is the proportion of behavioral health discharges increasing at general acute hospitals, but behavioral health is the top primary diagnostic category for most age groups 44 and under,” the report states.
