Local, state and federal officials announced the start of a partner project to “mitigate” impact to neighborhoods using federal funding

Officials want you to consider buzz words such as “revitalization,” “economic investment” and “opportunity” when you think about thousands of dollars to be poured into planning the future of some of Lafayette’s oldest neighborhoods that flank the Evangeline Thruway.

They are, of course, going to be the most impacted by the largest infrastructure project in Lafayette’s history.

The 5.5-mile Interstate 49 South connector will run from Interstate 10 to Lafayette Regional Airport with a proposed six-lane overpass near the city’s downtown district.

The connector’s 18-month planning process began over a month ago. Local, state and federal officials announced the start of a partner project to “mitigate” impact to neighborhoods including LaPlace, McComb-Veazey and Sterling Grove.
