CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty wants to reduce how long people are held in the crowded county jail and speed up the processing of felony cases.

McGinty is circulating a report he commissioned from the National Center for State Courts and the Pretrial Justice Institute that lays out several costly and time- consuming problems at Common Pleas Court, and recommends solutions.

It costs the Cuyahoga County jail about $85 per day to house an inmate, and there are a couple thousand inmates in jail at any given time. According to the prosecutor’s office, more than half of those inmates are waiting for their first court appearance.
