CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland has joined several other Ohio cities that have outlawed the sale of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to people under age 21.

City Council approved legislation banning sales to young adults on Monday. Two central Ohio cities -- Upper Arlington and Grandview Heights -- approved similar laws earlier this year.

The new Cleveland law takes effect 120 days after Mayor Frank Jackson signs it and will make it illegal for vendors to sell tobacco products to people ages 18 to 20. The law doesn’t criminalize use by people that age. Councilman Joe Cimperman, who sponsored the Cleveland legislation, says the new law is intended to stop teenagers from becoming addicted to cigarettes.

Council also passed a resolution asking the city administration to not hire people who use tobacco products.
