Summit County is now part of the new federal TechHire Initiative, the White House announced, with Akron being named a “TechHire City.”

The designation means as many as 400 people in the Greater Akron area will get training for high tech jobs by the end of 2016.

The county and its partners this fall will be able to ask the Department of Labor for up to $6 million in a federal grant to provide those job training opportunities.

The TechHire Initiative aims to connect Americans with well-paying technology jobs through training and education.

The Akron/Summit County plan calls for so-called boot camp training and community college partners to work with public workforce, government, higher education and community-based organizations. The partners will, with local companies, offer training, host internships and apprenticeships and then help people get full-time jobs.
